Bottom center is the most common and universally accepted position. Bottom right is popular for business documents. Academic papers often use top right. Consider your binding method - if documents will be bound, position numbers away from the binding edge so they remain visible when pages are turned.

Use the start page option to begin numbering from page 2 or later. Most tools let you specify which pages receive numbers. For documents with cover pages and table of contents, you might start numbering from page 3 or 4 while still counting earlier pages in the sequence.
